The Autism Act is 10 years old this year. This has increased awareness and progress has been made in enabling people with autism to live fulfilled lives. But there is still considerable discrimination and misunderstanding particularly among employers.
I remember first employing someone who is autistic. She was very good at interview but never made eye contact which made the process feel awkward. After we offered her the job she told the Managing Director that she was autistic. She was clearly good at her job but required more effort to manage. When I was told she was autistic there was a light bulb moment and I then understood how to manage those 1-1 meetings. She progressed fast and when I left the organisation she took over my role.
Take time this week to find out more about autism at https://www.autism.org.uk/ and particularly look at the Too Much Information materials.
